The German Humboldt School of Guayaquil wanted to build an additional campus in the growing suburb of Samborondon and invited a select group of firms to participate in a competition for the architectural design; Arkitektura won the project.
The concept for the new school was to create an educational institution, inspired by the German system that promotes creativity, motivation, and curiosity. The architecture itself was to be a learning tool, offering clear, functional and harmonic solutions reflecting the schools philosophy. Balance between built volumes and open spaces was an important starting point to create fluid connections between academic rooms, art classes, research facilities, outdoor spaces, sports areas, and performance venues.
Sustainability was an important parameter requested by the School—our solutions respected orientation, natural light and ventilation, and special insulation for exterior walls and roofs. Generous green areas, and a well studied landscape complemented these features with trees placed exactly were shadow would be necessary. Our project is the first phase of the new campus’s development.
